Hi John. Clive was correct that there is a difference between DAC and DAC+/AMP. Just tried with a HiFiBerry DAC+ and a HiFiBerry AMP. In both volume can be manipulated through the alsamixer, whereas the HiFiBerry DAC can't. I don't have access to the Audiophonics DAC you mention, but if you use it by selecting the HiFiBerry DAC from the dropdown list in piCorePlayer I would suspect that it can't be controlled, whereas if you select it by using HiFiBerry DAC+ from the dropdown list it might be possible to control it via alsamixer.
