Hi.

My first thought is: 
1. You are aware that the wifi connection will have another IP address
than the LAN?  Have you used an IP scanner to find a possible wifi IP
address?
If you have a screen you can try to attach it to the raspberry when it
is booting. Maybe you can detect the error. At the end of the boot
process it will show the IP address of both the LAN (if connected) and
the wifi connection.

2. If you are using a hidden SSID you can't connect using piCorePlayer.
Also the name and password could be a problem if it contains special
characters.

3. It could be a power problem, as attaching a wifi dongle will demand
more power.
