Hi Jeff and Michael,
I got it working, with all your excellent feedback. Let me explain what
I did:
- Uninstalled all logitech RPMs, stopped the TAR-based LMS server,
deleted all the stuff in /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/. Clean.
- I tried Jeff's steps right there in the CentOS 7 baremetal Server
where I've had my problems up til now (before making a VM to test... to
be scientific)
-> LMS ran, as it has, but the media scan now worked.
Since there was no OS change, no change in the media files, not even a
reboot of the server since the last tests with the TAR install, then it
must be the RPMs.
Here is what I installed that I had up until then NOT installed:

Michael: you had suggested I was perhaps interuppting the scan. I wasn't
doing anything at all other than having defined where the files live and
waiting. The server.log contained an abort message, but at that point
the browser was still open to the LMS page, which variable was
non-repsonsive or simply immediately resturned from the scan with "0"
files found. Probably it wasn't user-error. ;)
Jeff: I think I'll make that VM anyway, because boy is LMS touchy, and
the best way to protect against a broken LMS is to keep it running all
to itself.
