I got something figured out here.  And of course I learned the hard
way.

Destroyed Jesse and started clean with Wheezy, installed adafruit
drivers, removed the PiTFT screen, booted to HDMI monitor, set skin at
Joggler.

shut down installed screen on pi booted with command in my post above
and it works perfectly.  Probably could have done the same with Jesse.

When I had the small screen WQVGA or whatever it is the mouse cursor
would dance and screens would randomly scroll through and even
experienced language changes. 

At the end of the day I don't care if the underlying OS is Jesse or
Wheezy.  I think I have it now.  Just need to make it persistent at boot
which should be fairly easy.
