Thank you but I prefer this (old) executable to a headless player. Finally found the problem. The provided .deb package was not setting the sticky bit on the jive_alsa executable. (unlike my other 32bit installation). So when main app was launched with a non-root user, jive_alsa was not permitted to access alsa libraries.
