Thanks Ralphy but it looks like my idea was wrong as well.

My "RPi2-1" system crashed at 1736 today, this was set to sequential. I
think I'm going to ignore this result though as this system kept showing
the same (1st) image over and over yesterday and kept requesting the
image list over and over I'll flatten this system and start clean.

"RPi2-2" system continues OK sequentially but I have been using this on
and off so maybe not a good test (would have done a few cycles though).

Weird but typically annoying fault, RPi2-1 is in my bedroom and used as
an alarm, it is set quite loud so a real wakeup when I have to use an
android app to turn it down in the morning ! :)
