i think we are quite OT for the picoreplayer 2 announcement - anyways.... If you play a mediafile with embedded artwork with vlc - vlc will use the embedded artwork and stores that in its artworkfolder. That way you can simple "extract" the artwork from the file. That artwork from the explicit file causes the importer/resizer to hang / stop.
