I think the best way to look at piCore is it is an embedded system, each time you boot it does a complete fresh Linux *install* into RAM ! Whatever happens to the file system is lost after a reboot. This is why piCore is extremely robust. You can do as much damage to the file system as you like, reboot, its all back clean. This is what allows you to simply pull the plug rather than doing a proper shutdown. So to get persistence requires a little effort, usually piCorePlayer handles this for the average user. piCore is only of few tens of MB not GB like other distributions.
