I have been running LMS on an ARM platform in my car for quite some time
now. The first system I had in my car was based on a Wandboard and it
had a "save shutdown" system. It used a fix 12 volt wire for the power
supply and it used a 12 volts wire that was controlled by the ignition.
The system would shutdown after the car was off for 4 hours. This
bridged shorter driving distances (say when you're shopping).

Although the Wandboard system has never failed, it was a bit large due
to additional electronics for the shutdown mechanism. So I replaced it
with a BPI system. The BPI system does not run into RAM (appart from the
LMS database files for increased performance) and should be shutdown
properly. I say should but I never did. It is in use for a year or two
and it has never failed on me yet. The only thing I did was to disable
any kind of logging I could find to make sure that the writing to the SD
card remains to a minimum.

I posted a picture yesterday about my current CarSqueeze system:

The system sits in the space under the armrest of my car. I also take it
with me when I'm traveling.
It has aphost installed so that it acts as an AP so that my phone
connects to it - I use iPeng to control it. It also runs Samba to share
my music. That is useful for putting more music on it: at home I connect
it to the network and use SyncBack on my laptop to copy (backup) my
music that resides on my NAS to my CarSqueeze. Works very well and I'm
very pleased with it.

If you're going to use a RPI with piCorePlayer then you can configure
the LMS database onto the external drive. That way you are completely
safe not to damaged the SD card when withing off the power without a
proper shutdown.
The reason why I haven't switched to piCorPlayer for my car system is
due to aphost and Samba. It would probably work on piCore but it needs
some fidling around.
