Considering I haven't yet come across a commercial recording that goes
beyond a 16 bit dynamic range, is 32 bits really an issue? 

Anyway, "32-bit" usually means "32-bit floating point" that has a
resolution of 24 bits (plus an 8-bit scaling factor that is irrelevant
in audio, but important if you are doing cosmology or sub-atomic
stuff...).
