Wondered if it might be a power issue. I have the whole lot powered with a Raspberry Pi adapter and gpio connections. Could this be an issue?
What's the power supply's specs? I'm running my Pi2 & 7" display & wifi dongle from an iPad charger (5.1V/2.1A). Depending on the cable used I'd get the under-voltage warning (a yellow bolt top right on the display)... using a 2.5V charger does work fine.
Make sure you don't have avoid_warnings in your config.txt (see eg. https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=82373).
