Thanks for the replies. I've tried without using the new_config file and setup through the script, and I get the same error.
I disconnected the DAC and tried again but same error in case of audio card interference. I changed the channel on the router from 12 to 1 - and it works!! I didn't think it would because I've been running jessie on the zero W and had no issues with the wifi at all (running on those channel), but it looks like that was the problem. Now let's hope I don't get any interference issues running on that channel.
