I found myself an old installation that still works with net-usb.
But it is NOT a clean install, and must have gone through insitu
upgrades from 3.x via 4.0B to 4.0.
Jet it does work, and installed in an other zero I have them running in
parallel for comparison.
The working one uses /tmp/tcloop/net-usb-4.14.56-pcpCore and registers:

Unfortunately the USB nics aren't the same, I've only got 1 with a hub,
I need to add the Realtec to connect to the CLI.
Perhaps I should revert the newest one back to pristine 4.0 and just add
net-usb-4.14.56-pcpCore
