Thanks for the feedback.
I am using the piscreen overlay as well, doing away with the modprobe
stuff, but I hadn't twigged to removing ads7846.

Speed 24000000 also works fine but it looks like you need to calibrate
the screen after you decide to rotate 90 or 270 which seems obvious.
I like the backlight hack.
