I think it would be best, to first get this installation working correctly, then sort out your backup procedure.:)
Why not start by making a fresh install of pCP on the card you have, and going slowly through each stage of the install and configuration procedure. For this, keep the pi connected by Ethernet cable. Can you do that? Don't plug in any usb sticks or anything else.
