does the backlight off function work for you when the player is in standby? For me, the display comes on as soon as voltage is applied and always stays on even after the player has been inactive for a long time. If I comment out "BacklightInvert=yes" in the file Lcdproc.conf, the backlight goes out as soon as Lcdproc starts. So I think it should be possible to control the backlight.
