You're not using a Dell Ultrasharp 2407 or 2408 WFP 24" screen for HDMI-audio are you?
I am, and I only recently discovered they have problems with HDMI-audio - sometimes the signal disappears spontaneously when switching audio paths - necessitating a power off/on reset on the screen. Nothing to do with PCP of course.
