Thanks, seems this was a bit of a problem solving 101 issue - answer power cycle the Topping. I had tried soft power cycling everything but it seems that the Topping needed power to be unplugged and fully rebooted, then reboot the pi and now multiple options work including the hw:CARD=MX3,DEV=0 that I thought it should be.
