Just to add to Roland's suggestion, using SoX's equalizer effect and a
custom-convert file is fairly straightforward. See, for instance, this
'recent thread on the topic'

or search the forum for "sox" and "custom-convert".

It would also allow you to specify different EQ settings for each
player, depending on room acoustics, user preferences, etc. It takes a
bit of processing power, but as long as you keep to a reasonable number
of equalizer commands, you should be fine.
