It's all rather strange but before posting I rebooted several times whilst I tweaked some settings all to no avail. After your reply I thought I'd give a reboot one last try before trying the reinstall option. On this occasion it worked and I now get 'IO::Socket::SSL: 2.060' as expected. No idea why it didn't work earlier but your input is, as always, much appreciated.
