Yeah I know that a NAS is designed to be on for 24/7, but I salvaged an
old mini-ITX MOBO to build a NAS based in Open Media Vault. This
solution much much power hungy when compared to an ordinary home NAS and
I'm only using it for storing and playback of my music collection. This
means that it will often be suspended for many days in a row and when I
turn it on again it will stay on for at least the entire listening
session. So it's certainly not cycling on and off the entire time. I'm
not too worried about the drives as they should be capable of handling
this.

I went for another solution: I installed LMS on the NAS :)
My NAS needs to be running in order to access the music collection, so
it makes sense to run LMS from the NAS. It also runs much smoother
compared to the Rpi.
