Unfortunately, since I needed to do a full reboot, I find that, now,
none of this has solved any part of my particular (very) small problem. 
If my dac is in standby mode upon a reboot, Squeezelite will not start. 
Just turning the dac on doesn't trigger Squeezelite to start on its own
any more. In order to get Squeezelite to start, I am back to having to
bring the dac out of standby and then restart Squeezelite.  Once that's
done everything's o.k. and Squeezelite survives putting the dac back
into standby.   So, essentially, I'm now back to the original behavior
before I tried any of these changes.
