I have also searched for this for ages - FOUND THE SOLUTION on Raspberry Pi blog! Forget the dtoverlay. Turn on the USB power in config.txt by adding
otg_mode=1 It should solve the issue - it did on my CM4/PiTray Mini based piCorePlayer.
