The Joggler skin should be the correct solution. If the Artwork is good,
they can use it, I think.

There's the piGridSkin - optimized for the Pi's original 7" display (like Joggler), but with larger artwork.

There is only the main menu that should be stripped a little bit. I
don't know which things can be all switched off.

It's probably easiest to connect a keyboard to the device, then hit the + key on the far right of it. That should bring up a context menu from where you can hide things.

My experience with kids using the Radio around that age is that they're not so much into messing around, but they want to find "their pictures" as quickly as possible. I used a Library View in LMS to create a "Kids" menu, which had nothing but their albums in it. "Kids" (or rather "Kinder" :-)) they were able to identify long before they could read it. But that's all they needed. From their they scrolled up and down and were happy.

I initially wanted to write a plugin and what not to make the system kids proof. But in the end they learned quicker than I was able to come up with something useful.
