I found the passive cooling was more than sufficient and decided that the noisy fan was not necessary.
My IR receiver works OK but I sit directly in front and only a couple of meters away. I guess your IR problem is caused by the small size and shape of the plastic bottom tray of the case. You could try locating the IR receiver closer to the front window of the case. I have also noticed that the wifi strength has been affected by the metal case.
