I kludged around with something similar (though your design looks much nicer) with a blurred background of the cover art and overlayed art and text, see:

I was using a standalone blur utility that I got off github at the time, I'd have to dig up a link since it's been a while and I moved to other projects which I've also never finished ;) The time required to blur the background was an issue because it's clunky for the song to change, the foreground to change, and the background be either still the last song or some solid color while you are waiting on the background to be displayed, even if it's only a couple seconds.
