Did not know about the VU-meters as extensions, but you can switch between different custom clock screens with screen switcher. I use it to see my Off-screen and a radar screen every 5 minutes for 30 seconds. You may cycle between more screens too if you like. Screen Switcher is no longer available under plugins, dont know why, but I had it from the times when I used the Touch. To copy it to the Pi you need access to it as root, configure SSH appropriate.
