I use RPI 3Bs, 4Bs and Inovato Quadras as streamers in my systems with either piCorePlayer or an RPI Squeezelite install. (My main system, another in the bedroom, and a headphone setup.) I've also heard some high end streamers and can't tell an audible difference when used with the same DACs. For me, there are a couple of reasons to use a more expensive commercial streamer, but audio quality is not one of them.
One reason is user interface for selecting music -- some people may prefer something other than LMS. Another reason is appearance -- there are some pretty sharp looking commercial players out there. A third reason is ease of setup -- using an RPi involves a willingness to do some computer setup that some will find puts them in over their head. A preconfigured player has its advantages. Finally, there is the pride of ownership -- or the snob appeal aspect.
