Tery, That's interesting info.
As a general rule, with legacy Macs (whether 69K or PPC), I find a stable combo is Mac OS 7.6.1 with OT 1.1.2. Of course, - Mac OS 7.6.x is a paid-for upgrade, and can be difficult to get legitimately. - Mac OS 7.6.1 needs a 32-bit clean machine (so no IIcx, SE/30 or older boxes). I have never been very happy with the stability of 7.5.3, or 7.5.5, especially on 68K machines. Patching OT 1.3 on to these is a bit of a pain. Many developers of network-related tools cite 7.5.3+OT 1.1.2 as their minimum requirements, which suggests that this combo is treated as a reliable baseline. But I still prefer 7.6.1 where possible. So, since 7.5.3+ OT 1.1.2 and 7.6.1 +OT 1.1.2 are both considered reliable combos, it would be pain all round if we were forced to patch all such systems to OT 1.3.x to try to get compatibiliy with OS X. Note however, that legacy machines running these combos can still access AFP shares over TCP/IP, when loaded with a suitable version of the AppleShare client. Hence at least they can be clients on an OS X network, if not actual servers. I take your point. It maight be helpful to record on a web-page the recommended stable configs for legacy Macs, so that people don't have to keep relearning this stuff by experiment.
