I have the permanent spinng beachball on a S900 running 10.1.3. Doesn't seem to affect anything but is an annoyance.
Under 10.1 I had the beachball and was suspecting problems with a 8x Matshita CDROM drive. So I removed it and replaced with a Toshiba 40X SCSI CDROM and the beachball went away. However, when I updated to 10.1.3 it came back. I haven't investigated any further.
