You may want to try initializing the drive with OS X's Disk Utility. I 
used this on a Western Digital 9.1GB drive that I previously had to use 
HDST to initialize in OS 9. With the OS X drivers, it mounts in both.

Of course, since this is your OS X volume, you'll need to start up from 
the Install CD to run Disk Utility.
