Success! I'm not sure what I did, but I got OS X going on my 2 GB drive today.
Some twiddling with scsi termination occurred yesterday, and I think I may have set the drive mid-chain to allow termination by the last drive (stock apple 1GB). Not sure. I also re-formatted the 1GB OS9 drive with HFS+. When I tried XPF OS X install again, it worked.
