I made the same mistake! Howie I think it was on the Supermacs list 
was the one who said it worked on his machine. I knew better but had 
to try it anyway. Howie is I think running his machine at a lower bus 
speed then I would (45mhz perhaps on a G3 at 360mhz). This may 
explain his being able to get away with the 3:2 cache ratio. I was 
really surprised mine runs at 2:1 in OSX with spec processing on. In 
OS 9.x  5:2 is the best I can do with spec processing off. It is 
however really fast at those settings.
Sorry this is too late to help but for next time....You can do an 
install of OSX over the top of your broken/screwed up OSX install and 
it will replace the defective files but will save your settings and 
files as much as possible. Most everything in your user file apps, 
docs ,mail, web browser settings etc are usually back to normal.
