Kris, glad you got the printer working. I have been able to print to a LJ4M and LJ4MV from OS X for some time.
>>As for my 6mb memory, I've got to think I'll look to get more. The processor in the LJ4 is pretty slow, and even though the data is going out of your computer over ethernet, it is limited by the bandwidth of the LocalTalk cabling from the Etherwave to the printer (230 bps). Plus, AppleTalk is very chatty and is a slow protocol. Adding memory may not make much of a difference in speed. >HP used to have downloads of configuration tools for their printers.=20 >These would work under OS 9, and perhaps under Classic. They allow you=20 >to do stuff like rename printers, adjust print-density, and so on. You can configure some of that right at the printer. Press the "on line" button to take it offline (light will go out), then you can use the "menu" and "item" buttons to travese the configurations. There might be documentation on the HP site for the menu tree. >The Canon engine in the HP 4 series is good for many miles of 600dpi. We have been using our LJ4 since new. It has over 500,000 pages on it. You can see how many pages is on yours by printing the PostScript test page. If you have a JetDirect card, you can print over TCP/IP directly from OS X using "lpd" style printing. I wonder if the Etherwave supports that? Our HP 8150 prints slower over AppleTalk direct than if our OPI system spools to a Linux lpd queue, which is forwarded to the 8150 over lpd. The spooled route is faster by 10 seconds with a 60 MB file. The 8150 is limited by the JetDirect interface though. It has a 100baseT connection, but the JetDirect won't push data into the RIP any faster than 2 MB/sec, as per HP documentation. -- Charles Dostale [EMAIL PROTECTED] System Administrator, Silver Oaks Communications http://www.silveroaks.com 824 17th Street, Moline IL USA 61265 309-797-9898 -- Unsupported OS X is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Unsupported OS X list info <http://lowendmac.com/lists/unsupported.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive <http://www.mail-archive.com/unsupportedosx%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
