Mark, In my experience I've had great difficulty getting my Umax SuperMacS900 to run MacOSX relaibly. Installing MacOSX was easy enough but the issue was reliability.
The story is much different as a far as a BeigeG3, but eve these machines are on the border of a supported config for MacOSX. I certainly did not have an issue with reliability on the BeigeG3 however. I do think that if you had the time and patience to iron out issues related to getting a legacy machine to run MacOSX I think it may be possible to have a reliable machine. The other thing is the cost factor. In my situation I believe that my stability issues had to do with my RAM and my Powerlogix Carrier ZIF card. I did not feel it would be wise to invest money in legacy RAM and the purchase of a new PCI G4 card. If the option is open to you I would recommend a BeigeG3 over upgrading a PCI PowerMac. I have a lot of nostalgia for the PCI Macs, I have four of them. I I cannot recommend upgrading a PCI PowerMac especially if your intention is to run MacOSX.
