"UNIX" has supported serial printing for years. The printing architecture
OS X uses is Apple's own technology, not related to standard (lpd) UNIX
printing. The version of CUPS thet use is modified to integrate with the OS
X printing subsytem.

Everything in /dev on OS X is dynamically created by the kernel, they are
not special files created with a MAKEDEV script like on Linux. To add
serial printing support a kernel module would need to be written/modified.

I am making a prediction (pure conjecture) that support for beige G3's will
be dropped with the release of 10.3.
