i have those all the time. the secret is to zip the files and then 
transfer them. i've noticed a speedup of about two thirds as well when 
the file is zipped, even if the zipped filed is not two thirds smaller.

In this mode, I've copied 1.2GB+ of stuff off the Mac onto Windows in 
one
hit, no problems. As soon as it's done and the Mac goes idle, it often
reboots, but that's OK.
