If you don't have a USB card, but intend to get one, you have to be careful what kind you put in it, as the wrong ones can cause occasional lockups.
On my particular system, my first was one of those no-name 8-port firewire/USB2 cards from eBay, and I got occasional lockups, at least once every 2 days, sometimes more often. It went incredibly insane with lockups upon enabling Quartz Extreme. After I figured out the combo card was the cause of the lockups, I switched to a simple 2-port USB card I had from a PC, and OS X Seems to like it, but OS 9 doesn't enable it, despite it actually identifying it as a USB card in the System Profiler. I tried adding a second, older USB card, which OS 9 could use, but I got lockups with it in the machine as well.
The only reason I ever boot into OS 9, is to use the floppy drive, since my digital camera is floppy-based, and the third-party floppy driver for OS X doesn't work well at all. Maybe I'll eventually get an external floppy drive.
