In order forUNIX(tm)tosurviveintothenineties,itmustgetridof itsintimidatingcommandsandoutmodedjargon,andbecomecompatible withtheexistingstandardsofourday.Tothisend,ourtechnicians havecomeupwithanewversionofUNIX,SystemVI,forusebythePC- thatis,the"PoliticallyCorrect."
PoliticallyCorrectUNIX SystemVIReleasenotes UTILITIES: "man"pagesarenowcalled"person"pages. Similarly,"hangman"isnowthe "person_executed_by_an_oppressive_regime." Toavoidcastingaspersionsonourfelinefriends,the"cat"commandis nowmerely"domestic_quadruped." Todate,therehasonlybeenaUNIXcommandfor"yes"-reflectingthe malebeliefthatwomenalwaysmeanyes,evenwhentheysayno.To addressthisimbalance,SystemVIaddsa"no"command,alongwitha "-f[orce]"optionwhichwillcrashtheentiresystemifthe"no"is ignored. Thebiasofthe"mail"commandisobvious,andithasbeenreplacedby themoreneutral"gendre"command. The"touch"commandhasbeenremovedfromthestandarddistributiondue toitsinappropriateusebyhigh-levelmanagers. "compress"hasbeenreplacedbythelightweight"feather"command. Thus,oldinformation(suchasthatfromDeadWhiteEuropeanMales) shouldbearchivedvia"tar"and"feather". The"more"commandreflectsthematerialisticphilosophyoftheReagan era.SystemVIusestheenvironmentallypreferable"less"command. Thebiodegradable"KleeNeX"displacestheenvironmentallyunfriendly "LaTeX". SHELLCOMMANDS: Toavoidunpleasant,medievalconnotations,the"kill"commandhasbeen renamed"euthanise." The"nice"commandwashistoricallyusedbyprivilegeduserstogive themselvespriorityoverunprivilegedones,bytellingthemtobe "nice".InSystemVI,the"sue"commandisusedbyunprivilegedusers togetforthemselvestherightsenjoyedbyprivilegedones. "history"hasbeencompletelyrewritten,andisnowcalled"herstory." "quota"cannowspecifyminimumaswellasmaximumusage,andwillbe strictlyenforced. The"abort()"functionisnowcalled"choice()." TERMINOLOGY: Fromnowon,"richtext"willbemoreaccuratelyreferredtoas "exploitivecapitalisttext". Theterm"daemons"isaJudeo-Christianpejorative.Suchprocesses willnowbeknownas"spiritualguides." Therewillnolongerbeainvidiousdistinctionbetween"dumb"and "smart"terminals.Allterminalsareequallyvaluable. Traditionally,"normalvideo"(asopposedto"reversevideo")waswhite onblack.ThisimplicitlycondonedEuropeancolonialism,particularly withrespecttopeopleofAfricandescent.UNIXSystemVInowuses "regressivevideo"torefertowhiteonblack,while"progressive video"canbeanycoloratalloverawhitebackground. Forfartoolong,powerhasbeenconcentratedinthehandsof"root" andhis"wheel"oligarchy.Wehaveinstitutedadictatorshipofthe users.Allsystemadministrationfunctionswillbehandledbythe People'sCommitteeforDemocraticallyOrganizingtheSystem(PC-DOS). Nolongerwillitbepermissibleforfilesandprocessestobe"owned" byusers.Allfilesandprocesseswillownthemselves,anddecidedhow (orwhether)torespondtorequestsfromusers. TheXWindowSystemwillhenceforthbeknownastheNC-17Window System. Andfinally,UNIXitselfwillberenamed"PC"-forProcreatively Challenged. ----- UNIX(tm)isatrademarkofUNIXSystemLaboratories.Anysimilartyof namesorattitudestothatofanyperson,livingordead,ispurely Coincidental -- Unsupported OS X is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Unsupported OS X list info <http://lowendmac.com/lists/unsupported.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive <http://www.mail-archive.com/unsupportedosx%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
