Due to limitations of the Beige G3 ATA controller, OS X must be installed to the first partition of no later than 8GB on these machines only.
These limitations do not apply to other G3's or SCSI drives...

Not *just* beige G3's, and ATA cards that are recognized as ATA, not SCSI under OS X 10.2 (which got a significant rewrite of the ATA drivers) will also exhibit the same symptom on affected machines as well as older machines.
