Mencoder and VLC

Im using Mencoder to back up some DVD's I own, and when the file 
finishes encoding, it won't open in Quicktime Player, but runs fine in 
VLC. Also, the video wont play on a PC in Quicktime or Media Player 
(UGH!).  Anyone know how to fix this? I also am curious, is there any 
way to make VLC the default application for opening movies? I like it 
lots better than QT, and I get fullscreen for free....
