Avenues of attack:

1. In single user mode, see if you can manually start netinfo and access
the database. Your netinfo database may be damaged. If so you can rename
the netinfo directory and let it reconstruct it (you'll lose all your
account info, though).

2. Look at /var/log/system.log to see what messages might have come out
later on in the boot sequence.

3. Enable telnet and ssh, see if you can telnet in. If not, edit /etc/rc
to start up an sshd or telnetd on an alternate port earlier in the boot
process. Or even start manually before exiting.

4. enable login on a serial port. Or start a shell on the serial port in
single-user mode.
