You can't boot OS X from an Adaptec 2940. In fact you shouldn't be
able to see a 2940 from OS X at all, except there's a FreeBSD/NetBSD
2940 driver left in Darwin that Apple hadn't removed as of 10.1.5
(last time I checked).

You need to at least install a narrow SCSI drive on the internal
SCSI bus or a 50-68 pin adapter and move one of your drives to the
internal bus. You may find that the Adaptec doesn't work well enough
under OS X to be worth keeping... I had to quit using mine, it
would go to sleep and never wake up.
