I have an 8500 running panther. I can't cold boot into Panther even when it was last run in X before shutdown and the X volume is selected as the startup volume. On cold starts I get the grey apple screen followed by the grey circle with a line thru it. I have to restart using the Option key to restart in 9. I then have to reinstall the extensions from XPostFacto 3.10 before I can start in X. I can then restart at will in X, until I shut down the machine.
I have the feeling that it might be the battery. But the clock is accurate even with the machine off for several days. Also its a pain to get to! I'm looking into all other possibilities before I do surgery. All the internals were switched from a 9500 into the 8500. Everything worked fine in the 9500. Other than the cold start issue everything is rock-solid. Specifics: 2 ata drives attached to Sonnet ATA/66 card (one on each side, X drive on bus alone - master) (2nd drive slave, with CD/DVD drive as master) Sonnet G3/400/512 CPU 512mb ram. OS-9 drive - 2gig SCSI Any ideas??
