What chipset did your combo card have? I just got one with an ALI M5271 controller, and it seems to have screwed up my Beige box too. Not as bad as yours but after CmdOptNV and CmdOptPR it's still flakey... it crashes for just about any installer, though it's mostly stable otherwise.
