What happens when you open the "sound" system preferences control? You should be able to select "Show volume in menu bar" and use the slider it provides to control the sound level. ADB or USB mouse would not matter. I sold my old PTP at 10.2.8, so I cannot say for 10.3, but that control worked fine with a XpoSFacto installation and an ADB keyboard.
