Hi all,

Just a positive report on a PowerMac 7600 running a XLR8 Carrier ZIF with an Apple G3/266 ZIF looted from a Beige G3 running at 275 MHz. OS 10.3.5 (thanks to Ryan for XPF!), 384MB RAM, and an Apple 10/100 card (also from said Beige G3) make this a useful server setup and storage is handled by a VST UltraTek ATA/66 with 2 x 120GB HDs (IBM & WD models). Everything works well and backups/storage run smoothly at 100bT (10 MB/sec) on our local network here.

I tried this setup months ago with only 256MB but the file transfers would frequently pause for long periods of time. That seems due to inefficient flushing of the file transfers from RAM with only a few MB free (running 'top' on the Teminal reveals that file transfers are done straight to RAM as well as dumped to disk as the empty RAM fills up as the files are copied thru the network). I then moved the whole setup to a Beige G3/233 w/512MB which worked fine.

More RAM solved the problem for the 7600 though there is a rare pause for a couple seconds with 384MB. 512MB shows no pauses but 384 is almost as good and I need the extra RAM elsewhere for a 7600 G4/400 I'm currently building :).

Good use for older parts!
