You can't port it; the bulk of the source is closed, private to Apple. If you want to run it, as observed, go get PearPC. If you want it on non-Apple hardware, start with Darwin. It is the core of OS X but for use on its own it needs a lot more work to be competitive with Linux - adding more drivers, better tools and installation program and so on. Firstly, you could help in porting Darwin to non-Apple PowerPC kit. There are numerous examples: Pegasos, AmigaOne, IBM pSeries servers and workstations and so on. http://www.pegasosppc.com/ - here now, open & not hugely expensive. http://www.eyetech.co.uk/ - AmigaOne, which currently only runs Linux. http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/power/ - the most powerful POWER machines on the planet. Alternatively, Darwin, *already runs* on x86. Do some work on that. The closest you're going to get to OS X on x86 would be a version of Darwin that was able to fully support GNUstep: http://www.gnustep.org/ It's a GPL re-implementation of the OpenStep libraries and GUI. Get that feature-complete and running natively on Darwin x86 and you'll have something damned close to OS X, without some of the graphical bells and whistle (like Aqua) but with the same basic UI, the same basic configuration model, file structure and so on. It would be more or less source-code-compatible with OS X, too. GNUstep has been around for years and is getting quite feature-complete, too. It's functional if patchy and missing some bits. Sadly, KDE and GNOME get the lion's share of the attention and development effort. -- Liam Proven Home: http://welcome.to/liamsweb * Blog: http://lproven.livejournal.com AOL, Yahoo UK: liamproven * ICQ: 73187508 * MSN: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Unsupported OS X is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Unsupported OS X list info <http://lowendmac.com/lists/unsupported.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive <http://www.mail-archive.com/unsupportedosx%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
