Let's see if I (and others?) then understand this... You are saying that
when the install cd or dvd do not recognize the computers and so will not
try to install, that bringing a previously installed copy of the system to
that machine via an external drive, and copying it...then works? Or did I
miss something here? You used what method of copy...carbon copy cloner?

yes, if u get the installer disk to boot you can run disk utility on it and restore the external drive (what does a block copy of it). Allow to erase the target disk, I read somewhere this must be done to get a boot-able copy

in my case I did a fresh install on a blue & white on a firewire drive. The b&w does not support booting from firewire drives so it was an untouched copy.

I just used the Panther disk to run disk utility on the unsupported machine.

The copied Panther started the setup assistant like it's perfectly normal.

Would the other way around also work...ie. If I take the drive from the
machine where it won't install, and put that drive in a newer machine to do
the install, can I then bring the drive back and have it boot/work? If so,
how much of the setup needs to be done on the second machine, or what parts
need to be done on the first one so it is happy there?

of course you can swap a hard drive from box to box - but with an external drive it's more comfortable :-)

Can someone (re) send me this message from Michael? Thanks.

it's only important for the latest beige G3s with rage pro onboard graphics
