After extensively upgrading the hardware on my old Power Mac 7600,<snip>
And like you I have the 8GB boot partition limitation so I don't want to clutter up my Home directory.
Check out the hints at <http://www.bombich.com> about moving your User directory to another partition. Very useful on those 8 GB limited systems...
Thanks for the info!
The 7600 shouldn't have any 8 GB limitation! In unsupported desktops it only applies to the internal ATA bus of the BeigeG3. You should simply install OS X on the larger partition and boot it directly. Then use your 8 GB partition to boot from to repair problems on the big partition. Even if you do have the 8 GB partition limit, you can always use the XPF helper disk boot process to boot the larger partition. The 8 GB limitation really is a red herring. There is no limitation by using a small helper partition within the first 8 GB. The only requirement would be that it be large enough to hold a bootable 9.1 System to run XPF from, that could be as small as 300-500 MB, although 8 GB with OS X installed seems prudent on a 160 GB drive. Boot the biggest partition and forget about moving your directories to non-standard locations.
